Lateral vibration issues often arise in propulsion shafts and their source can be either an intrinsic design fault or a grounding damage. It can very often lead to loss of stern tube oil, seal damage and finally to stern tube bearing fatigue damage. Nautilas uses eddy current analogue proximity sensors in order to measure the shaft displacement in two directions and therefore construct its orbit. The amplitude and spectrum of vibration is therefore analysed and the origin can be easily and safely targeted.
